All of this kitchen remodeling has me thinking about color in kitchens. The plumbers are here hooking up the sink, dishwasher, etc. today. For my eclectic-Mexican-modern (for lack of a better description!), I picked wall colors that are almost early 1970’s retro: muted yellow-gold, orange, sagey green. But what makes it modern is that the green is a cool green (rather than avocado) and I also have periwinkle blue as an accent color. And the cabinets are sleek hickory rather than the dark wood seen in many kitchens of that era. The lime paint and Saltillo tile is the Mexican influence and our Saarinen Tulip dining set and abstract art makes it modern.
What I was thinking about was the use of purple in kitchens. Thank whatever personal deity you may have that they are not very popular! Purple is not a good food color and almost all shades are appetite killers except only for accent pieces such as towels or a vase. Once in a blue moon I see a magazine with a violet kitchen, usually beyond just an accent wall. Hideous! Luckily, the most purple associated with kitchens I’ve seen is appliances and accessories such as this whole page on Amazon. This is a good thing! So if you love purple, be careful! And call me for help! Or do what I do: confine it to a bathroom.
