Hi Folks
I was looking around for info about color and found an editorial on this website.
Unfortunately, the writer is not named and I can't figure out how to contact someone on this website. The "contact" button is a dead link. Anyway,. the reason I mention it is that most of the information in this little editorial is too general to be of any use and some of it is downright out of date and/or just not culturally sensitive. For example, and I quote:
"1. Know Your Market
Are they Asian? (Think red.) Are they Dutch? (Think orange.)"
Are you kidding me? Talk about generalizations! So every Asian website has to be red?
And this quote is priceless:
" 3. Watch the Car Makers
Car manufacturers spend millions on color research so you don't have to. Watch the top selling car colors to see emerging trends. Lexus appears to be especially sensitive to colors."
Since when do car makers have the corner on the color for web design?
The writer is talking apples and oranges here. Yes, car makers do lots of research because cars take a few years to develop from start to finish. So you had better get the color right when you are building cars. But with web design it's a whole other game. Websites are must easier to build and can be tweaked and changed easily. Very different from cars. Plus car manufacturers are NOT the best source for emerging trend information because their lead time is so long. Better to look at fashion for emerging trends.
So keep that in mind when asking for color advice for product design or graphics or anything for that matter- talk to someone who has had color training.
Ciao
